Big air

July 17, 2010

Wow, here’s (a) a good nuts-and-bolts photography website, and (b) some eye-popping pictures from Ottawa-based commercial pilot and a self-taught photographer Louis Helbig.

Massive scale seems to be the new black for serious photography, or at least one shade of new black. The pictures on this site , all taken from the air, are at once familiar and alien, immediately recognizable and startlingly original. The one above, Bitumen Slick N57.19.28 W111.25.44 Syncrude Aurora North, AB, Canada, is from Helbig’s “Beautiful Destruction — Alberta Tar Sands” series.

I’d love to see them wall-sized, rather than on-screen.
